Saturday at Rob Akers Reserve was more than just a celebration of a sport; it was a tribute to a legacy. On April 11th, the Pine Rivers Swans officially marked 10 years of women’s football, honoring the pioneers, the champions, and the over 100 women who have worn the Blue and Black since the program’s inception.
The highlight of the evening was the prestigious announcement of the Team of the Decade (2016–2025), recognising the standout performers who defined the first ten years of Swans women’s footy.
Vision Against the Odds
The journey began in 2016, a year that changed the fabric of our club forever. At a time when women’s pathways were still emerging, then-President Dylan Barker and his wife, Jen, championed the cause. Going against the odds to build a program from the ground up, their vision provided a home for female athletes in our community.
Since those first training sessions, the program has grown into a powerhouse. To date, over 100 women have represented the Swans, each contributing to a culture of toughness, inclusion, and elite competition.
Ten Years of Triumphs
The first decade of the program has been marked by a staggering level of on-field success. The Swans women have established themselves as perennial contenders, boasting a resume that most clubs would envy:
- Finals Consistency: Reaching the post-season in 8 out of 10 seasons.
- Grand Finalists: Two hard-fought Grand Final appearances in 2022 and 2025.
- Individual Brilliance:
- Taylor McCosker: League Best & Fairest (2022).
- Lara Mason: League Best & Fairest Runner-Up (2025).
- Kitara Whap-Farrar: Queensland State Representative (2023).
- Danni Anderson: First Woman To Reach 100 Club Senior Games.
The Future: A Complete Pathway
While we look back with pride, the next decade is already off to a historic start. For the first time in Pine Rivers history, the club is fielding a complete female pathway, with teams in U/9, U/11, U/13, U/15, and U/17s.
This full development pipeline is a testament to the tireless work of our volunteers and players. The Swans have become a destination club—a place where young girls can start their journey at five years old and aspire to lead the Senior Women’s team one day.
“To see the growth from one team to a full pathway is incredible,” a club spokesperson noted. “It’s a credit to every person who fought for this program. The Swans are now a place where females truly aspire to represent.”
Here’s to the next ten years of flying high!
